Břeclav je mesto v okrese Břeclav v Česku. Má rozlohu 87,17 km² a približne 25 000 obyvateľov. Je dôležitou železničnou križovatkou na trase do Rakúska a na Slovensko.

Břeclav leží na rieke Dyje, ktorá mestom preteká v severo-južnom smere a následne sa v lužných lesoch južne od neho, kde tvorí štátnu hranicu medzi Českom a Rakúskom, vlieva do rieky Morava. Okrem hlavného koryta, ktoré prechádza priamo centrom mesta, sa medzi centrom a časťou Poštorná nachádza aj odľahčovacie rameno. Do neho tu ústi potok Včelínek.
Koryto Dyje v lužných lesoch južne od mesta bolo v 70. rokoch 20. storočia vyrovnané vodohospodármi. V roku 2018 sa na českej i rakúskej strane začal projekt, ktorý plánuje navrátiť tok rieky do mŕtvych ramien v záujem šetrenia vody v krajine.[2]
Severozápadne od mesta sa nachádza časť sústavy rybníkov s názvom Lednické rybníky, konkrétne do katastra Břeclavi sčasti spadá plocha dvoch z nich: tzv. Mlýnského rybníka a Prostředního rybníka. Oba sú napájané vodou z potoka Včelínek.
Lednické rybníky sú súčasťou Lednicko-valtického areálu a v roku 1953 boli taktiež vyhlásené za národnú prírodnú rezerváciu. Plnia úlohu významného hniezdiska vtákov, pričom sa tu vyskytujú napr. druhy potápka čiernokrká, hrdzavka potápavá, bučiačik močiarny a fúzatka trstinová. Využívané sú od 15. storočia, pričom v prvej polovici 19. storočia boli rodom Lichtenštajnov parkovo upravené.[3][4]
Mesto sa skladá z troch administratívnych častí, ktoré boli pôvodne samostatnými obcami: Břeclav, Poštorná a Charvatská Nová Ves.[5]
Na území dnešného mesta je niekoľko lokalít, ktoré boli osídlené už v praveku a medzi najvýznamnejšie patrí veľkomoravské hradisko Pohansko (v lesoch juhovýchodne od mesta).
Pravdepodobne v 1. polovici 11. storočí založil knieža Břetislav I. pohraničný hrad, ktorý bol po ňom pomenovaný – odtiaľ názov Břeclav. Nové centrum sa stalo jedným z najdôležitejších správnych centier Moravy. V 13. storočí bola na hrade vybudovaná kamenná veža. V nepokojnom 15. storočí tu sídlila husitská posádka a do podhradia sa presťahovali obyvatelia neďalekého zničeného mesta. Na mieste dnešného centra si založili nové mestečko, nazvané Nová Břeclav – pôvodná lokalita je dodnes označovaná ako Stará Břeclav.
V 16. storočí získali hrad i mesto Žerotínovci, ktorí pevnosť prebudovali na renesančný zámok. Od roku 1638 boli majiteľmi panstva Lichtenštajnovci, ktorým patrili i blízke Valtice a Lednice. Počas vojen s Osmanskou ríšou a nasledujúcej tridsaťročnej vojny bola Stará i Nová Břeclav takmer zničené. V rámci rozsiahlych stavebných a krajinárskych úprav vznikol tzv. Lednicko-valtický areál a břeclavský zámok bol prestavaný v romantickom štýle.
Významným medzníkom v rozvoji mesta bola výstavba Severnej dráhy cisára Ferdinanda, ktorá 6. júna 1839 spojila mesto s hlavným mestom Viedeň. Po vybudovaní trate do Brna v roku 1841 sa stal Břeclav prvý železničný uzol v Rakúsko-Uhorsku. Neskôr pribudlo spojenie na Bratislavu, čím ešte viac stúpol dopravný význam mesta.
Prístupnosť spustila rozvoj mesta a vznik cukrovaru, píly, chemickej továrne a tehelne v Poštornej. Roku 1850 sa Břeclav stal sídlom súdneho okresu a v októbri 1872 bol povýšený na mesto. Pripojením Valticka (1920) sa stali súčasťou Česko-Slovenska tiež dolnorakúske obce Poštorná a Charvátská Nová Ves a dovtedy samostatné obce Stará Břeclav a Břeclav – židovská obec boli zlúčené s Břeclavom.
Podľa mníchovskej dohody bolo mesto so značným strategickým významom pripojené k Nemecku. V rámci správnych reforiem v roku 1949 sa stal Břeclav sídlom okresu. V rokoch 1974 a 1976 boli k mestu pripojené susedné obce Poštorná, Charvátská Nová Ves a Ladná (do 2006, kedy sa opäť osamostatnila). Od konca 80. rokov začal útlm priemyslu i v Břeclavi.
