Zorba the Greek (Greek: Αλέξης Ζορμπάς, Alexis Zorbas) is a 1964 Greek British American comedy-drama movie directed by Michael Cacoyannis and is based on the 1946 novel The Life And Times Of Alexis Zorba by Nikos Kazantzakis. It stars Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates, Irene Papas, Lila Kedrova, Sotiris Moustakas, Anna Kyriakou and was distributed by 20th Century Fox. It won for three Academy Awards in 1964.

The movie was released in 1964. It stars Anthony Quinn as Zorba. The movie is based on the 1946 novel The Life and Times of Alexis Zorba by Nikos Kazantzakis. Sometimes, the movie is called Alexis Zorbas, which is the original Greek title.The movie was nominated for seven Oscars, in 1965, it got three: Lila Kedrova was awarded Best Supporting Acrtress, Walter Lassally was awarded Best Cinematography, and Vassilis Photopoulos was given best scenic setting. Quinn was nomnated as best Actor, but lost to Rex Harrison, in My Fair Lady.

The movie is about a young British intellectual, Basil who travels to Crete, to look at an old coal mine of his family. He meets and hires Alexis Zorbas, a Macedonian worker and soldier. The film is also about the contrasts of the poorr working people, and the idealized images of intellectuals. Sorbas lives fro the moment, without making great plans. This is a stark contrast to Basil.
