Operand

In mathematics, an operand is a number or variable being worked on in an equation or inequality.

Notation

In ${\displaystyle (3+5)\times 2}$, the operands are 3, 5, and 2, and the operators are ${\displaystyle +}$ and ${\displaystyle \times }$.

Name of operands

Operands have different names depending on the operation that is done to them.

• ${\displaystyle x+y}$ Addition: addend

• ${\displaystyle x-y}$ Subtraction: minuend & subtrahend

• ${\displaystyle x\times y}$ Multiplication: factor

• ${\displaystyle x/y}$ Division: dividend & divisor

• ${\displaystyle {\frac {x}{y}}}$ Division (fraction): numerator & denominator

• ${\displaystyle x^{y}}$ Exponentiation: base & exponent

• ${\displaystyle {\sqrt[{y}]{x}}}$ Root: index & radicand

• ${\displaystyle \log x}$ Logarithm: base & power

• ${\displaystyle x\backslash y}$ Modulation: modulend & modulator
