An open world is a type of video game design. In an open world game, the player is allowed to do quests or jobs in a more free-form nature.

Many video games are very straightforward, where quests and objectives are all very closely linked to the main story. Open world games differ from this, because you are allowed to roam freely in the game environment without necessarily having to follow the main plot of the game.

Some examples include the Grand Theft Auto games, Arma 3, Dead Space. Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, Minecraft, Sonic Forces, Asura's Wrath,The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
