New Granada was a large region in northern South America controlled by the Spanish Empire up until a rebellion led by Simón Bolívar successfully declared independence in 1819. After independence, New Granada reformed itself into Gran Colombia. Gran Colombia eventually collapsed in 1831 into the countries of Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela (and later Panama, from Colombia).
