Area code 601 is an area code for Mississippi. It was one of the first primary area codes ever created in 1947. It initially covered the entire state of Mississippi, but after it was split by 228 in 1997 and 662 in 1999, it now covers the central and southern portions of the state. The towns 601 consists of include its capital city, Jackson. It was overlaid by 769 in 2006.
