They serve the northeastern part of the state, including cities like Huntsville, Decatur, Florence, and Anniston. Area code 256 was created on March 23, 1998, when it was split from area code 205. It covers a large region in northeastern Alabama, such the following counties: Calhoun, Cherokee, Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Franklin, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, Morgan, and Winston. It was overlaid by 938 in 2010.
