Hurricane Isaias (/ˌisɑːˈiːɑːs/)[1] was a damaging hurricane. However, it was a weaker hurricane. It caused a lot of damage across the Caribbean and the East Coast of the United States. It also created a lot of tornadoes. One of the tornadoes was one of the strongest created by a hurricane since since Hurricane Rita in 2005. Isaias was the ninth named storm and second hurricane of the record breaking 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. It came from from a strong tropical wave off the coast of Africa that was first seen by the National Hurricane Center on July 23. The tropical wave slowly became more organized, and had gale-force winds on July 28, before becoming Tropical Storm Isaias on July 30. Isaias is the earliest ninth named storm ever, ahead of 2005's Hurricane Irene by eight days. Isaias became into a Category 1 hurricane the next day. Its highest speeds were 85 mph (140 km/h). Its lowest central pressure was 987 mbar (hPa; 29.15 inHg). On August 1, the storm affected North Andros, Bahamas and afterward weakened to a tropical storm. It moved right next to the east coast of Florida and Georgia. As Isaias went toward the Carolina coastline, it became a hurricane just before going over Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina on August 4. The storm then moved quickly over the East Coast of the United States as a strong tropical storm, before becoming an extratropical cyclone over Quebec on August 5. Isaias's extratropical remnants were there for another day, before going away.

Many tropical storm watches and warnings as well as hurricane watches and hurricane warnings were created for the Lesser Antilles, Greater Antilles, Bahamas, Cuba, and the East Coast of the United States. This was because the storm would be dangerous to people there. Isaias hit areas of the Eastern Caribbean and caused a lot of damage in the Eastern United States. Very damaging flooding and wind damage was seen in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Many towns did not have safe water or electricity. Trees and power lines fell down in a lot of the Eastern United States, with more than 3 million people who didn't have electricity. Almost half of them were in New Jersey. Isaias was the second tropical cyclone to affect the Northeastern United States in 3 weeks since Tropical Storm Fay in July.[2] Because so many people lost electricity, companies were looked at. Eighteen people died in storm-related incidents: fifteen in the United States, two in the Dominican Republic, and one in Puerto Rico. Overall, Hurricane Isaias caused approximately $4.725 billion (2020 USD) in damage, with $4.5 billion in damage alone in the U.S., making Isaias the costliest tropical cyclone to affect the Northeastern United States since Hurricane Sandy in 2012.[3][4] The name "Isaias" was difficult to pronounce for many people, causing many weather forecasters in the United States to say it incorrectly.[5]
