The Batman (movie)

The Batman is a 2022 American superhero mystery movie. It is based on the DC Comics character of the same name. It is made by DC Films. It was released by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is a reboot of the Batman movie series. The movie is directed by Matt Reeves. He also wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin. Robert Pattinson plays Bruce Wayne / Batman.

In 2023, the movie was nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Sound, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Visual Effects.^[3]

Plot

During his second year of fighting crime, Batman is investigating the Riddler, a serial killer who targets rich, powerful and corrupt Gotham City citizens. Batman finds out the corruption that connects to his own family during the investigation, and is forced to make new allies to catch the Riddler and bring the corrupt to justice.^[4]

• Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman:^[5]
  A billionaire businessman of Wayne Enterprises who focuses on protecting Gotham City from crime and violence as a highly trained, masked vigilante.^[6] Director Matt Reeves said that this version of the Batman is inspired from Kurt Cobain.^[7]
• Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon: The Gotham City Police Department commissioner and a friend of Batman. Wright is the first actor of color to play Gordon in movie.^[8] The character was played by J. K. Simmons in Justice League (2017).
• Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman: A burglar and Gotham City resident. Kravitz voiced the character in The Lego Batman Movie (2017).^[9]
• Paul Dano as Edward Nashton / Riddler: A serial killer who leaves riddles at crime scenes after murdering top corrupt Gotham City officials.^[10]
• Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot / Penguin: A mob boss from Carmine Falcone's mob.^[11]
• Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth: Bruce Wayne's butler and close friend.^[12][13]
• John Turturro as Carmine Falcone: Leader of a big Gotham City mafia.^[11][14]
• Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson: Gotham's district attorney.^[14]

Also, Jayme Lawson has been cast as Bella, a politician running for office in Gotham.^[15] Rupert Penry-Jones plays Mayor Don Mitchell, Gotham City's mayor who was murdered by the Riddler. Barry Keoghan plays an unseen Arkham Asylum prisoner who is later discovered to be The Joker.^[16] Alex Ferns plays Commissioner Pete Savage, a corrupt police commissioner.^[17] Con O'Neill plays a Gotham City police chief. Charlie and Max Carver appeared as club bouncers for the Penguin.^[18]

Release

The Batman was released on March 4, 2022. It was originally supposed to be released in June 2021, but wasn't because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has a runtime of 175 minutes including credits, making it the longest Batman movie and the third-longest superhero movie after Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).^[1]

Reviews for the movie are positive with critics liking the acting, action scenes and music, however some did not like how long the movie was.^[19][20][21]

Sequels

The Batman is the first in a new trilogy of Batman movies. In April 2022, it was officially confirmed that a sequel to The Batman was in the works, with Pattinson and Reeves set to star and write respectively.^[22]
