It was founded as a mail order company in 1965. The first Petco store opened in 1976 in La Mesa, California. It has since grew to 1,000 locations in the United States, Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Unleashed by Petco was a concept store first opened in Hillcrest, San Diego, California. The Unleashed by Petco stores were smaller than regular Petco locations.
