Ismail I (17 July 1487 – 23 May 1524), was the Shah of the Safavid dynasty of Persia from 1501 until his death in 1524. He started the Safavid dynasty and was the effective founder who went on to unite most of Persia for the first time since the Sassanids and establish Shia Islam as the main religion.
