In May 2019, Fernández announced his candidacy for president for the 2019 election.[1] He was elected president in October 2019, beating incumbent President Mauricio Macri with a 48% to 40% vote count.[2]
In April 2023, Fernández announced that he decided to not seek reelection to the presidency in the 2023 election.[3] He was succeeded by Javier Milei on 10 December 2023.
In August 2024, Fernández was accused of domestic violence and harassment by his former partner and first lady Fabiola Yáñez during their tenure as president and first lady. Fernández denied the allegations. He is currently banned by an Argentine court from leaving the country while the investigation is underway.[4] On 14 August, Fernández was indicted on charges of domestic abuse against Yáñez.[5]
