බ්රිතාන්ය ලංකාවේ, ලංකාවේ සහ ශ්රී ලංකාවේ අග්රාමාත්ය තනතුර දැරූවන් මෙහි දැක්වේ.1947 දී ශ්රී ලංකා අගමැති තනතුර ඇති කිරීමේ සිට මෙ දක්වා ශ්රී ලංකාවේ ( 1948 දක්වා ලංකා යටත්විජිතයේ අගමැති, 1972 දක්වා ලංකාවේ අගමැති නමිනුත් ) අග්රාමාත්යවරු 14 දෙනෙකු පත්වී ඇත. 1978 දක්වා ආණ්ඩුවේ ප්රධානියා වූයේ අග්රාමාත්යවරයායි.
1972 දී රට නිදහස් ස්වයිරී ස්වාධීන ජනරජයක් ලෙස හැදින්වූ අතර මෙතැන් සිට මෙම තනතුර ශ්රී ලංකාවේ අග්රාමාත්ය ලෙස හදුන්වන ලදී. වෙළඳ සහ රාජ්ය ආරක්ෂාව පිළිබද අමාත්ය ධූරයද 1977 දක්වා අග්රාමාත්යවරයා විසින් උසුලන ලදී. ජේ.ආර්.ජයවර්ධන බලයට පත්වීමත් සමග මෙම අමාත්ය ධූරය ආරක්ෂක අමාත්ය ධූරය සහ විදේශ කටයුතු අමාත්ය ධූරය ලෙස වෙන් වෙන් වශයෙන් ස්ථාපිත කරන ලදී.
1978 දී ජේ.ආර්.ජයවර්ධන අග්රාමාත්යවරයා විසින් ව්යවස්ථා සංශෝධනයක් කරන ලදී. මෙහිදී විධායක ජනාධිපති ධූරය හදුන්වා දුන් අතර අග්රාමාත්යවරයාට පවතින බලතල අඩු විය. ඉන්පසුව රජයේ ප්රධානියා විධායක ජනාධිපතිවරයා වූ අතර අග්රාමාත්ය ධූරය සාමාන්ය තනතුරක් බවට පත් විය.
ශ්රී ලංකාවේ නව ව්යවස්ථාව යටතේ අග්රාමාත්යවරයා කැබිනට් මණ්ඩලයේ ප්රධානියා වූ අතර නියෝජය ජනාධිපති ධූරයද හොබවන ලදී. ජනාධිපතිවරයා තනතුරේ රැදී සිටියදී මිය ගියහොත් නව ජනාධිපතිවරයෙක් පත් කිරීම සදහා නැවත ජනමත විචාරණයක් පවත්වන තුරු අග්රාමාත්යවරයා ජනපති ධූරයේ වගකීම හොබවනු ලබයි. 1993 දී ජනාධිපති ව සිටි රණසිංහ ප්රේමදාස හදිසියේම ඝාතනය කල අතර ඩිංගිරි බණ්ඩා විජේතුංග ජනාධිපති ධූරය සදහා පත් විය.
1947 න් පසුව නිල දැරූ අග්රමාත්යවරු 14 දෙනාගෙන් දෙදෙනකු අවස්ථා තුනකදී නිල තල දරන ලද අතර දෙදෙනකු දෙවරක් නිල තල දරන ලදී. මින් අග්රාමාත්යවරු පස් දෙනෙකු ජනාධිපති ධූරය ලබා ගැනීම සදහා ඉදිරිපත් විය. 2015 ජනවාරි 9 සිට 2018 ඔක්තෝම්බර් 26 දා දක්වා ලංකාවේ අග්රාමාත්ය ධූරය දරනු ලැබුවේ රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ මැතිතුමා විසිනි. ජනාධිපති මෛත්රීපාල සිරිසේන මැතිතුමා විසින් ඔහුව බලයෙන් පහ කර හිටපු ජනාධිපතිවරයෙකු වන මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මැතිතුමා 2019 ඔක්තෝම්බර් 26 වනදා අග්රාමාත්ය ධූරයේ පිහිටුවන ලද අතර වත්මන් අග්රාමාත්යවරයා ලෙස එතුමා කටයුතු කරයි.

Sirimavo Bandaranaike declared the country a republic, and its name was changed from Ceylon to Sri Lanka.[7] Nationalized many companies in the plantation sector and imposed restrictions on several imports.
