Gaziantep (Ottoman Turkis: Ayintap; previously an still informally cawed Antep; ʻayn tāb [ʕajn tæːb]; North Sirian vernacular: ʻəntāb [ʕɪ̈nˈtæːb], adj. ʻəntēbī [ʕɪ̈nˈtɛːbiː]) is the caipital ceety o the Gaziantep Province in Turkey. It is amangst the auldest continually inhabitit ceeties in the warld. The ceety haes twa central destricts unner its administration, Şahinbey an Şehitkamil, an the metropolitan aurie haes a total population o 1,252,329[1] (2007) and an area of 7,642 km² (2,950 sq mi).[2] Gaziantep is the saxt lairgest ceety in Turkey an the lairgest ceety in the kintra's Sootheastren Anatolie Region.
Etymology
Gaziantep wis oreeginally cawed Aïntap (frae Arabic عين تاب) but efter some centuries the name shiftit tae Antep. The oreegin o the name is shroudit in mystery, but there are several theories:
- "Aïntap" mey be derived frae "Khantap", meanin "keeng's land" in the Hittite leid.
- "Aïntap" means "full o springs" in Persian.
- "Aïn", a wird o praise, an "tap", meanin "spring", mey hae combined tae form the name.
- "Ayin ţaba" means "guid spring" in Aramaic (housomeivver, the Arabic name for the ceety is spelled with t, not ṭ)
In 1921, "Antep" wis legally renamed "Gaziantep", meaning "Victorious Antep".[3]
