Himeji haes been the centre o Harima Province syne Nara period. Efter the Battle o Sekigahara, Ikeda Terumasa received a fief at Harima Province an established the Himeji Domain. He expandit the Himeji Castle an its castle toun.

Himeji wis the caipital o Himeji Prefectur (later Shikama Prefectur) syne 1871, but the prefectur wis merged intae Hyogo Prefectur in 1876. The ceety o Himeji wis municipalized on Aprile 1, 1889. Efter the 1923 Great Kantō yirdquauk, the Japanese govrenment reportedly conseidered flittin the naition's caipital frae Tokyo tae Himeji.
