В 1989 года, когда Maiden взяли годичный отпуск[4], Dickinson и бывший гитарист группы Gillan Janick Gers сочинили песню «Bring Your Daughter... to the Slaughter», которая стала саундтреком для фильма a film soundtrack.[5] Его сольный дебют Tattooed Millionaire (1990) был выдержан в духе pop metal, что кардинально отличалось от Maidenоподобной музыки, которой ожидали фаны.[6] Четыре песни — заглавная композиция, «Dive! Dive! Dive!», «Born in '58» и кавер-версия David Bowie «All the Young Dudes» — были изданы как синглы. Dive! Dive! Live!

Allmusic's John Franck said that the album was «somewhat of a disappointment» and failed to «come up with anything truly groundbreaking»,[8] except for «Tears of the Dragon», which was released as a single, along with «Shoot All the Clowns».[8] Roy Z продолжил работать со своим собственным коллективом, а Дикинсон пригласил новых участников, с которыми представил двухдисковый концертный альбом Alive in Studio A. Третий альбом, Skunkworks, был издан в 1996 году, marking a «highly approved stylistic shift».[9]
Due to musical differences, the members left the band, and Dickinson once again was joined by Roy Z, along with then ex-Maiden guitarist, Adrian Smith.[10] The follow-up album, Accident of Birth (1997), marked a return to a heavier sound for Dickinson.[10] The title track and «Man of Sorrows» were the released as singles. The next year he released a semi-concept album on alchemy, The Chemical Wedding, which was described as a «modern metal aesthetic».[11] The «muscular anthem»,[11] «Killing Floor», was the album’s single. The live album, Scream for Me Brazil, documented a 1999 live performance in São Paulo during the supporting tour. That year, Dickinson and Smith rejoined Iron Maiden, and the project once again went on hiatus. He released a «best of…» album in 2001, which included two new songs, «Broken» and «Silver Wings». On May 23, 2005, Dickinson released his first album in seven years, Tyranny of Souls. To commemorate this, he reissued all past releases on the same day. The studio efforts were remastered, featuring bonus tracks, and the live recordings were merged into a boxed set called Alive.[12] The 2006 compilation DVD, Anthology, contained three live performances, all of the promo videos, and over one hour of extras.[13]
