Svartkatten er en LP-utgivelse basert på et gruppearbeid ved Nationaltheatret, et teaterstykke med samme navn. Både stykket og plata ble lansert i 1971.

Bakgrunnen for produksjonen var en konkurs ved A/S Vestfos Cellulose desember året før. 250 arbeidere mistet jobben. Mange var eldre arbeidstakere, med små utsikter til ny jobb i Vestfossen. Skuespillere ved teateret engasjerte seg i saken, og laget stykket i samarbeid med oppsagte Vestfos-arbeidere. Svartkatten var en klart politisk produksjon, med brodd både mot det man så som kapitalmakt og pampevelde.
Svartkatten var også et innlegg mot norsk medlemskap i EEC, i forkant av folkeavstemningen i 1972. Royaltyinntektene av albumet gikk til Folkebevegelsen mot EEC og Arbeiderkomiteen mot EEC og dyrtid.
Medvirkende var Frøydis Armand, Veslemøy Haslund, Jan Hårstad, Egil Kapstad, Lars Andreas Larssen, Bjørn Nilsen, Liv Thorsen og Janken Varden. Med på albumet var også Ivar Antonsen, Ditlef Eckhoff, Jan Garbarek, Ole Jacob Hansen, Sigurd Haugen, Per Løberg, Dag Åkeson Moe og Radka Toneff.
Kjell Kjær og Truls Kwetzinsky sto for cover-designet på LP-en, der motivet var basert på en fane fra Nes arbeiderforening, i sin tid stiftet av Marcus Thrane. Plata ble utgitt med sangtekstene i eget vedlegg.
