Folkehøgskolen startet i 1901, første navnet var Oplandenes kristelige ungdomsskole. Det aller første året leide skolen seg inn på Berg gård i Biri, men flytter deretter til nåværende område ved bredden av Mjøsa. Området ble først lånt vekk gratis av Johanne Mustad, og deretter overtok skolen egen tomt og bygde opp de første skolebygg fra 1906 og fremover.
I 1917 overtok Indremisjonen i Opplandene (senere Oppland krets) som eier av skolen.
Det har vært en variasjon i skolens fagtilbud gjennom årene, men i hovedsak vært en kombinasjon av både praktiske og teoretiske fag. I 1978, etter at nye lærekrefter kom inn, startet skolen opp et nytt undervisningstilbud i form av en musikklinje. I 1979 gikk Gudbrandsdal krets av Indremisjonsselskapet som medeier av Viken.
I 1988 gikk Viken over til å bli ren musikkfolkehøgskole, alle linjer ble nå innefor musikksegmentet. Gjennom 40 år tidligere har skolens navn vært Viken Folkehøgskole, så mange kjenner den som det.
2013 stod Viken ferdig nybygd/påbygd/ombygd.
Statens flyktningesekretariat hadde kontrakt med Viken fra november 1986 til mai 1987, og 26 asylsøkere fra Irak og Libanon var plassert der i det tidsrommet. Dette etter økende pågang av asylsøkere til Norge, som skapte et behov for nye mottakssentraler.
