Lufthavnen stasjon, hvis navn ble vedtatt sommeren 2004, er siste stasjon på metroens tredje forlengelse på Amagers østkyst, Østamagerbanen, som besto av en forlengelse av linje M2. Strekningen strekker seg over 4,5 kilometer (hvorav ½ kilometer går under bakken) fra Lergravsparken metrostasjon til Lufthavnen stasjon med stopp ved fem stasjoner og gjorde stasjonen til den nye endestasjonen på linje M2.[1] Det egentlige anleggsarbeidet ble påbegynt ved våren 2004. Byggingsarbeidet består av to separate broer over henholdsvis Øresundsmotorveien (E20) og den nærliggende jernbanen til henholdsvis innkommende og utgående metrotog. Stasjonen slutter etter en sikkerhetsbremsesone, ved den nordlige vingespiss av flyplassens Terminal 3 (stasjonsområdet i den spisse enden) på øverste etasje i parkeringshuset P5 og vest for Hilton Copenhagen Airport hotell. Lufthavnen stasjon kommer til å ligge på de nye broer - umiddelbart før lufthavnens parkeringshus. Heretter finnes det en gangpassasje fra stasjonen inn og gjennom parkeringshuset, slik at passasjerene kan gå direkte inn i flyplassens Terminal 3. Det blir en videre oppgang til stasjonen fra gateplan.

Den 8. september 2005 ble det arrangert et reisegilde på metrostasjonen[2][3] som en feiring av at rekonstruksjonen på det nye byggingen var ferdig. Lufthavnen stasjon ble åpnet den 28. september 2007[4] og skulle ifølge en prognose daglig betjene rundt 25.000 passasjerer.[2] Ørestadsselskabet (Østamagerbaneselskabet) sto for konstruksjonen av banen over det østlige Amager (til og med Øresundsmotorveien), mens Københavns Lufthavne A/S var byggherre til selve Lufthavnen metrostasjon (fra og med jernbanesporene) i samarbeid med Ørestadsselskapet.[5] Metrostasjonen er tegnet av Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter, og skal matche med lufthavnens øvrige arkitektur og fasade ved bruk av materialene granitt, stål og glass.[6] Samme tegnestue har nemlig tegnet jernbanestasjonen, Terminal 3 og kontrolltårnet i Københavns lufthavn, Kastrup[7] og er særlig kjent for å ha stått bak den gamle lufthavnsterminalen fra 1939. Arkitektonisk er stasjonen unik sammenlignet med de øvrige metrostasjonene, siden den er plassert over jernbanesporene og utformet som en lukket glass- og takkonstruksjon[3] med overlys og utsikt til Øresund, motorvei og lufthavn[6].
