«Fjellsangen» («Å, kom vil I høre en vise om Gjest») ble en populær slager etter at Alfred Maurstad sang den i filmen Gjest Baardsen fra 1939. Teksten var opprinnelig skrevet av Holger Sinding og ble publisert i en bok Gjest Baardsen: en Forbryders Livsroman, utgitt i Kristiania 1890 under pseudonymet Halle Sira. Filmen baserte seg også på denne boka som var en svært fri og fantasifull gjendiktning av Gjest Baardsens egen selvbiografi.
Alfred Maurstad kuttet bort halvparten av Holger Sindings tekst, han tok også bort det lange refrenget Sinding hadde utstyrt visa med, dessuten slo han to og to strofer sammen slik at det skulle stemme med den melodien som Adolf Kristoffer Nielsen (1890–1960) hadde komponert til filmen.
Gjest Baardsen var selv en habil visemaker og tjente gode penger mens han satt i fengsel på å selge visetekster til skillingsviseforleggere. To av visene hans, Jeg beilet engang til en Pige saa skjøn og Grusomme skjebne ble fremdeles sunget av eldre mennesker på slutten av 1900-tallet.
