Side A av Scum ble innspilt for £50,00 ved Rich Bitch studio i Birmingham i august 1986. Den var opprinnelig ment å utgjøre en del av en delt utgivelse med det engelske hardcore thrash bandet Atavistic på Manic Ears records fra Bristol. Etter en omfattende endring i besetningen i Napalm Death ble den andre halvparten av Scum innspilt ved Rich Bitch studio i mai 1987. Albumet ble utgitt som et vanlig album gjennom Earache Records i juli 1987.
Sangen «You Suffer» ble oppført i Guinness rekordbok som verdens korteste sang. Sporet er nøyaktig 1,316 sekunder langt.
Trommeslageren Mick Harris var den eneste musikeren som spilte på begge sidene av albumet.
Den første utgivelsen av albumet på CD (i 1988) kom som en 54-spors CD som også omfattet albumet From Enslavement to Obliteration og 4 bonusspor. Først i 1994 ble disse to albumene gjenutgitt som to separate CD-er.
