Rorevannet stenges i vest av raet, og det har utløp via Bjorsund til Nidelva. Ved høy vannføring i Nidelva kan strømmen i Bjorsund snu og renne inn i Rore.
Vannverket for Grimstad og Arendal tar vann fra Rore og innsjøen er hoveddrikkevannskilde for 60 000 mennesker. I 2012 ble det kjent at sørv er spredt til vannet, noe som kan være uheldig for vannkvaliteten, da sørven spiser småfiskene som igjen spiser alger. Dette kan føre til en oppblomstring av alger.[3] Det er ikke tillatt å campe, bade dyr eller kjøre motorkjøretøy ned til vannet, samt det henstilles at man ikke bader i vannet. Bruk av motorbåt er kun tillatt ved tillatelse.[4]
Rore er egnet til sportsfiske, og har ørret, abbor, bekkerøye og gjedde, i tillegg til den uønskede sørven.[5]
