Ortsteilen finnes ved sammenløpet av elvene Spree og Dahme.[1] Den omfatter store skogsområder, Berlins største innsjø Müggelsee og en av Berlins høyeste berg, Müggelberge.
Allerede før 1200 hadde sprevanerne, en slavisk stamme, slått seg ned i området, og kalt byen Copnic. Kupa er et slavisk ord for høyde eller ås, og endelsen -nik innebærer at det er en bosetting ved høyden.[1]
Under navnet Cöpenick ble byen selvstendig allerede i middelalderen. Byen beholdt den selvstendige status til 1920 da den ble slått sammen med Berlin.
En administrativ bydel (Bezirk) med navn Köpenick fantes inntil 1. januar 2001 og omfattet i tillegg til dagens område Köpenick en rekke andre områder.
Dagens byområde (Ortsteil) Köpenick omfatter det samme området som byen fra 1920, og er med sine 35 kvadratkilometer det største byområde i Berlin.
Köpenick er kjent fra historien om skomakeren Wilhelm Voigt, som i 1906 fikk narret til seg bykassen, og dermed ble opphavet til begrepet køpenickiade.
Köpenick har en egen godt vedlikeholdt gamleby og egne forsteder. Barokkslottet Schloss Köpenick er en del av Berlins kunstindustrimuseum.
