I Dortmund finner vi det berømte fotballlaget Borussia Dortmund, som spiller sine hjemmekamper på Signal Iduna Park, som åpnet i 1974 i forbindelse med VM i fotball. Det ble også spilt kamper her under fotball-VM i 2006.
Dortmund er kjent som Westfalens grønne storby. Nesten halvpartens av kommunens areal består av elver, skogsomoråder, jordbruksområder og grønne områder med store parker.
Byens julemarked (Weihnachtsmarkt) er ett av Tysklands største, og her finner man et av verdens største «juletrær», lagd ved å stable hundrevis av trær i pyramideform.
Dortmund lufthavn ligger 10 km utenfor byen. Sentralstasjonen er Tysklands tredje største knutepunkt for fjerntrafikk. Dortmund havn er Europas største kanalhavn.
Dortmunds historie går tilbake til 880 e.Kr., da byen for første gang er omtalt i skriftlige kilder, som Throtmanni[2]. Det var en liten landsby den gang. I 1152 kom keiser Fredrik Barbarossa til området og gjenoppbygde byen, som var blitt ødelagt i en brann. I to år var Dortmund Barbarossas residens, og etterpå vokste byen til en av de mektigste byene i det tysk-romerske riket. På 1200-tallet ble Dortmund med i Hansaforbundet. I 1220 fikk byen status som riksstad, det vil si at den var direkte underlagt keiseren.
Etter Napoleonskrigene mistet Dortmund sin uavhengighet og ble innlemmet i Preussen. Byen ble etter hvert et viktig senter for kull, stål, og øl.
Under andre verdenskrig var Dortmund, sammen med andre byer i det viktige Ruhr-området, mål for de alliertes bombetokter. Omtrent to tredeler av husene i Dortmund ble ødelagt i løpet av krigen.
I dag er byen sentrum for høyteknologisk industri. Det er også en av de grønneste byene i Westfalen, med store parker og grøntområder som ble anlagt i gjenoppbygningsperioden etter andre verdenskrig.
