Kaolin eller porselensjord er ei leire som opphavleg vart vunnen ut i Gaoling i provinsen Jiangxi i Kina.
Leira er kvit og særs plastisk med fleire bruksområde, og består hovudsakleg av mineralet kaolinitt (aluminiumsilikat).
Ordet kjem frå namnet på Gāolǐng, 高岭 (eldre transkribering: Kao-ling) i provinsen Jiangxi i Kina (namnet tyder høgås). Frå denne staden henta ein leire til dei kjende porselensfabrikkane i Jingdezhen. Andre keramiske produkt, skapt for å likne på porselenet, inneheld òg kaolin som beinporselen, feltspatporselen og flintgods. Ein nyttar òg kaolin for produksjon av finare tegl, innan papirindustrien (for å gje ei kvit og glatt overflate), innan kosmetikkindustrien og ved produksjon av gummi, og tidlegare òg i medisin, som piller og strøpulver.
Materialet vert òg nytta ved produksjon av sanitetsgods, eldfast tegl og isolatorporselen.
I Europa kjenner ein til at kaolin vart produsert på Dei eoliske øyane i oldtida. Kaolinførekomstr finst utover i Gaoling òg mellom anna i Böhmen, Tyskland, Cornwall, Bornholm, Frankrike, Bulgaria og USA. I Sverige finst kaolin på Ivön, og i Billinge i Skåne.
