Dallas er ein av dei ti største byane i USA og er hjartet i det største byområdet i Texas. Det er òg fylkessete for Dallas County og ein liten del av byen går inn i nabofylka Collin, Denton, Rockwall og Kaufman County. Dallas er oppkalla etter USAs 11. visepresident George M. Dallas.

Dallas er den største byen i metropolen Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) i det nordlege Texas. I følgje folketeljinga i 2000 har Dallas 1 188 580 innbyggarar, og DFW hadde 5 222 000 innbyggarar. Dette gjer DFW til den femte største byen i USA, og ein av dei 50 største metropolane i verda.
