Indalsälven rann tidlegare gjennom den 25 km[1] lange Ragundasjön, og så like ut i eit høgt stryk som då vart kalla Gedungsen eller Storforsen. Det var eit av dei mest imponerande fossefalla i Sverige med eit samla fall på 35 meter og ei stor vassføring.
På 1700-talet vart det vanleg med tømmerfløyting i området, men Storforsen var eit stort hinder der tømmeret vart skadt eller øydelagt. Magnus Huss, òg kjend som Vildhussen, starta derfor i 1793 ein kanal for å omgå fossen. I løpet av dei neste åra vart kanalen bygd. Kanalen vart graven ut i laus sand og grus, avsetningar frå isbrear, og sanden fall stadig attende i kanalen. For å få vaska bort sanden, demde dei opp ei lita elv i nærleiken, og kvar gong dei opna demninga, vaska vatnet med seg sanden. Vårflaumen 1796 var derimot uvanleg stor, og vatnet grov med seg det lause elvefaret, som raskt vart erodert. Dette førte til at heile Ragundasjön vart tømd for vatn på berre fire timar natt til 7. juni 1796 og ei 15 meter høg flodbølgje vaska nedover elva. Dette førte til store skadar nedover i elva, men ingen mista livet. Alle sedimenta som vart vaska bort enda opp ved utløpet til Indalsälven og Sundsvall-Härnösand lufthamn vart sidan bygd på desse avsetningane.
Den tørrlagde Storforsen vart heitande Döda fallet og er i dag eit naturreservat og eit av dei store turistmåla i kommunen. Kvart år vert det halde eit spel til minne om det som skjedde våren 1796.
