Blåmåndag er tradisjonelt den siste måndagen før fasta tar til. Dagen kan ha denne nemninga fordi ein tidlegare pynta alteret i kyrkjene med eit blått klede denne dagen.[1]
Dagen før blåmandagen, fastelavnssundag, var det vanleg å festa. Festinga kunne halda fram til månadagen, slik at også denne dagen blei rekna som ein fridag.[1]
Tradisjonelt skulle alle handverkssveinar ha fri kvar måndag, «halde blåmandag». Sveinelauga hadde møte måndag føremiddag ettersom det var fordbode i lang tid å ha møte på sundagar. I Noreg blei denne typen blåmåndag avskaffa ved handverksloven av 1839.[1]
No for tida blir uttrykket «blåmåndag» meir brukt om ein vond dag, ein dag etter ein rangel i bokstavleg eller overført tyding, der ein vaknar opp til arbeidsveka att etter helga.
