മദ്ധ്യ ഏഷ്യയിലെ തുർക്കിക് രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് തുർക്മെനിസ്ഥാൻ. പേർഷ്യൻ ഭാഷയിൽ നിന്നാണ് തുർക്മെനിസ്ഥാൻ എന്ന പേര് വന്നത്. "തുർക്കികളുടെ നാട്" എന്നാണ് ഈ പേരിന്റെ അർത്ഥം. ഇതിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനം അഷ്ഗാബാദാണ്. 1991-വരെ ഈ രാജ്യം സോവിയറ്റ് യൂണിയന്റെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു. തെക്ക് കിഴക്കൻ ദിശയിൽ അഫ്ഗാനിസ്ഥാൻ, തെക്ക് പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ അതിർത്തികൾ. രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ 70 ശതമാനത്തോളും ഭൂപ്രദേശം കാരകും മരുഭൂമിയാണ്. ഡിസംബർ 2006 വരെയുള്ള കണക്കുകളനുസരിച്ച് 5,110,023 ആണ് ജനസംഖ്യ.
