നട്ടെല്ലുള്ള ജീവികളിൽ പിത്തരസം ശേഖരിച്ചുവെച്ച് ആവശ്യാനുസരണം ക്രമാനുഗതമായി ചെറുകുടലിലേക്കു് കടത്തിവിടുന്ന ചെറിയ ഒരു അവയവമാണു് പിത്താശയം അഥവാ പിത്തരസാശയം (Gallbladder)[2]. മനുഷ്യരിൽ ശസ്ത്രക്രിയ വഴി ഈ അവയവം പലപ്പോഴും നീക്കം ചെയ്യേണ്ടി വരാറുണ്ടു്. കോളെസിസ്റ്റക്ടമി എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ശസ്ത്രക്രിയ താരതമ്യേന ഗുരുതരമായ ദൂഷ്യഫലങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കാറില്ല[അവലംബം ആവശ്യമാണ്].
