ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ലൈബ്രറി

ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ലൈബ്രറി, യു.കെ.യിലെ ദേശീയ ലൈബ്രറിയും^[2] പട്ടികയിൽപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ള^[3]  ഇനങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണമനുസരിച്ച്, ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ലൈബ്രറിയുമാണ്.^[4]  പല രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുമായി ഏകദേശം 150 ദശലക്ഷത്തിലധികം^[5] പുസ്തകങ്ങളും മറ്റ് ഇനങ്ങളും ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്. നിയമപരമായ ഒരു നിക്ഷേപ ലൈബ്രറി എന്ന നിലയിൽ, യു.കെ.യിലും അയർലണ്ടിലും ഉൽപ്പാദിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന എല്ലാ പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടേയും ഓരോ കോപ്പികൾ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ലൈബ്രറി സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നതു കൂടാതെ ബ്രിട്ടനിൽ വിതരണം ചെയ്യുന്ന വിദേശ ടൈറ്റുകളുടെ ഒരു വലിയ ഭാഗവും ഇവിടെയെത്തുന്നു.

ചരിത്രം

1972 ലെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ലൈബ്രറി ആക്ട് അനുസരിച്ച്, 1973 ജൂലൈ 1 നാണ് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ലൈബ്രറി രൂപീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്.^[6] ഇതിനു മുൻപ് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് മ്യൂസിയത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്ന ഈ ലൈബ്രറിയ്ക്ക്, അവിടെയുള്ള വൻ പുസ്തകശേഖരം കൈമാറ്റം ചെയ്യപ്പെടുകയും അതോടൊപ്പം നാഷണൽ സെൻട്രൽ ലൈബ്രറി, ദ നാഷണൽ ലെൻഡിങ്ങ് ലൈബ്രറി ഫോർ സയൻസ് ആൻഡ് ടെക്നോളജി, ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് നാഷണൽ ബൈബ്ലിയോഗ്രഫി തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രവർത്തനം നിറുത്തിയ ചെറു സംഘടനകളുടെ പുസ്തക ശേഖരങ്ങൾ പുതിയ ലൈബ്രറി ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.^[7]
