അലെപ്പോ

സിറിയയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ രണ്ടാമത്തെ നഗരമാണ് അലെപ്പോ (Arabic: حلب‎ ['ħalab], Turkish: Halep, English:Aleppo). അലെപ്പോ ഗവ‌ർണറേറ്റിന്റെ ആസ്ഥാനവും വടക്കൻ സിറിയയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പട്ടണവുമാണിത്. ജനവാസമുറപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പുരാതന നഗരങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണിത്.^[7] ടെൽ ഖറാമെലിൽ കണ്ടെത്തിയ താമസ കെട്ടിടങ്ങളിലൂടെ, ബി.സി. പതിനൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുമുതൽ തന്നെ ഇവിടെ ജനവാസമുണ്ടായിരുന്നതായി തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഖൽ‌പെ, ഖാലിബൻ എന്നിങ്ങനെയാണ്‌ പുരാതനകാലത്ത് ഈ നഗരം അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. ഗ്രീക്കുകാരുടെ ഇടയിൽ ബിറോയ് എന്നും അറിയപ്പെട്ടു. കുരിശുയുദ്ധകാലത്തും പിന്നീട് ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഭരണകാലത്തും അലിപ് (alep) എന്ന പേരായിരുന്നു ഉപയോഗിച്ചു വന്നിരുന്നത്. അലെപ്പോ എന്നത് അലിപിന്റെ ചെരിച്ചുള്ള ഉച്ചാരണ രീതിയാണ്‌. 'ശുദ്ധപാൽ' എന്നാണ് അറബിയിൽ അലെപ്പോ എന്ന വാക്കിനർത്ഥം.
