അഡ്രിയാറ്റിക് കടലിനു തെക്കായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന മദ്ധ്യധരണ്യാഴിയിലെ ഒരു ഉൾക്കടലാണ് അയോണിയൻ കടൽ (Ionian Sea ഗ്രീക്ക്: Ιόνιο Πέλαγος [iˈonio ˈpelaɣos]; ഇറ്റാലിയൻ: Mar Ionio [mar ˈjɔːnjo]; അൽബേനിയൻ: Deti Jon [dɛti jɔ:n]) .അയോണിയൻ കടലിന്റെ പടിഞ്ഞാറായി തെക്കൻ ഇറ്റലിയും ,വടക്കായി തെക്കൻ അൽബേനിയയും ഗ്രീസിന്റെ പടിഞ്ഞാറേ തീരവും സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു

അയോണിയൻ കടലിലെ പ്രധാന ദ്വീപുകളെല്ലാം ഗ്രീസിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു, ഇവയെ അയോണിയൻ ദ്വീപുകൾ എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. കോർഫൂ, ഇതക, പാക്സസ്, ലൂക്കസ്, കെഫാലീനീയ, സാന്തീ, കീതീറാ എന്നിവയാണ് അയോണിയൻ ദ്വീപുകളിൽ വലിയവ. മദ്ധ്യധരണ്യാഴിയിലെ ഏറ്റവും ആഴമുള്ളത് −5,267 മീ (−17,280 അടി) അയോണിയൻ കടലിലെ 36°34′N 21°8′E ആണ്.^[1][2]. ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവുമധികം ഭൂകമ്പസാധ്യതയുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണിത്.
