മീരാ നായരുടെ ആദ്യ ചലച്ചിത്രമായ സലാം ബോംബെ അവർക്ക് 1988 ലെ കാൻ ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയിൽ ഗോൾഡൻ ക്യാമറ നേടിക്കൊടുത്തു.കൂടാതെ മികച്ച വിദേശ ഭാഷാ ചിത്രത്തിനുള്ള ഓസ്കാർ നോമിനെഷനും ലഭിച്ചു ഈ ചിത്രത്തിന്.ഈ സിനിമയിൽ നിന്ന് കിട്ടിയ വരുമാനം കൊണ്ട് തെരുവ് കുട്ടികളുടെ ക്ഷേമത്തിനായുള്ള സലാം ബാലക് ട്രസ്റ്റ് എന്ന സംഘടന സ്ഥാപിച്ചു .[2]
