1970 ഏപ്രിൽ 11-ന് ഇന്ത്യൻ സമയം രാത്രി 12.43 നാണ് അപ്പോളോ 13 പുറപ്പെട്ടത്. ജയിംസ് ലോവൽ, ഫ്രെഡ് ഹൈസ്, ജാക്ക് സ്വൈഗർ എന്നിവരായിരുന്നു യാത്രക്കാർ. ഓക്സിജൻ ടാങ്കിന്റെ പുറത്തെ പാളി പൊട്ടിത്തെറിച്ചതുമൂലം ചന്ദ്രനിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്ര തുടരാൻ നവൃത്തിയില്ലാതെ ഏപ്രിൽ 17-ന് അവർ ശാന്തസമുദ്രത്തിൽ ഇറങ്ങി. മാർഗ്ഗമദ്ധ്യേ അപകടം പിണഞ്ഞാലും ഒരു ബഹിരാകാശ വാഹനത്ത തിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുവരാൻ സാധിക്കുമെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു അപ്പോളോ 13-ന്റെ തിരിച്ചെത്തൽ.
