Rakstos pirmoreiz minēta 1255. gadā. Tāpat kā vairums Slovākijas pilsētu, tā gadsimtiem atradusies Ungārijas sastāvā, tās ungāriskais nosaukums ir Gālsēča (ungāru: Gálszécs). Pēc Pirmā pasaules kara iekļāvās Čehoslovākijā. No 1993. gada — Slovākijā.
Pēc tautības vairums pilsētas iedzīvotāju ir slovāki (95,89 %). Pēc reliģiskās pārliecības — katoļi (47,05 %), grieķu katoļi (25,71 %), nereliģiozi (18,11 %).
