Su Dienbjenfu siejama pusiau legendinė VIII a. tajų vietovė Muangtenas. Antrojo pasaulinio karo metu, Dienbjenfu veikė vietnamiečių karinė bazė, skirta kovai prieš japonus. Indokinijos karo metu (1945–1954 m.) ties šiuo miestu vyko lemiami mūšiai. 1953 m. lapkričio 21 d. prancūzų kariuomenė užėmė Dienbjenfu ir įkūrė stovyklą su 16 000 karių (vadas Christian de Castries). Vietnamiečių kariuomenė (Vietminis), vadovaujama Vo Ngujen Ziapo, apsupo miestą ir 1954 m. gegužės 7 d. jį galiausiai užėmė. Dienbjenfu užėmimas tapo Prancūzijos kolonijinės valdžios pralaimėjimo Indokinijoje simboliu[1].
