Skandinavų mitologijoje vanai – vaisingumo dievų grupė. Manoma, kad senesni už asų grupės dievus, kurie tapo pagrindiniais dievais. Jie buvo vaisingumo, jūros ir klestėjimo dievai. Buvo laikomi turto, derlingumo, taikos globėjais, o su asais – vienybės nešėjais. Vanai buvo burtininkai ir pranašai, gerai išmanė magijos meną, mokėjo įžvelgti ateitį. Buvo manoma, kad deivė Frėja išmokė asus magijos meno. Vanai praktikavo endogamiją ir kraujomaišą, priešingai nei asai, kurie tai draudė. Vanų kraujomaišos pavyzdys: Freiras ir Frėja buvo Njordo ir jo sesers Nertos (vers. deivės Skadi) vaikai. Jų buveinę Snoris Sturlusonas vadina Vanaheimu.

Pirmasis karas žemėje kilo tarp asų ir vanų, kai pikta vanų burtininkė Gulveiga (Heidė) atėjo pas asus ir tapo šio karo priežastimi. Karas buvo ilgas ir pragaištingas, abiem pusėms grėsė sunaikinimas. Tačiau pavyko sudaryti taiką, tada vanai ir asai apsikeitė įkaitais. Tokiu būdu pas asus nukeliavo vanai Njordas su vaikais Frėja ir Freiru, kurie taip pat tapo prilyginami asams, o pas vanus nukeliavo asai Henis ir Mimis. Po karo pabaigos žemėje baigėsi aukso amžius.
Skandinavai praktikavo pasiriktinai asų, vanirų arba abu kultus. Krikščionims buvo ypač sunku atversti į savo religiją vanų kulto išpažinėjus. Vanų kultas dominavo tose vietovėse, kur pagrindinis pragyvenimo šaltinis buvo žvejyba.
