1912 m. pradėjo kurtis Sorokino angliakasių gyvenvietė. 1938 m. pavadinta Krasnodonu („raudonasis Donas“) ir gavo miesto teises. Antrojo pasaulinio karo metais miestas pagarsėjo dėl antifašistinės vaikų grupuotės „Jaunoji gvardija“ (Молодая гвардия').[7]
2014 m., per Donbaso karą, Krasnodoną užėmė Lugansko Liaudies Respublikos separatistai. 2016 m. Ukrainos Aukščiausiosios Rados nutarimu grąžintas senasis Sorokynės pavadinimas, tačiau faktiškai neįsigaliojo.[8]
