Biocenozę sudaro 3 pagrindiniai gyvosios gamtos komponentai: fitocenozė, zoocenozė, mikrobiocenozė ir mikroorganizmų pasaulis. Mikrobiocenozė – tai įvairių mikroorganizmų, grybų, bakterijų pasaulis. Jie dar vadinami reducentais arba destruktoriais. Jie perdirba visas gyvas ir negyvas organines medžiagas iki neorganinių junginių ir grąžina viską į apykaitos ratą augalams.
Pirmasis biocenozės terminą pavartojo vokiečių ekologas Karlas Mėbijus 1877 m.[1]
Biocenozės pagrindas - biotopas.
