Homines mediaevales qui situm Veronae haud sciverunt nomen tantum cognoverunt e rege illo Theoderico quem epici Theodisci Dietrich von Bern, scil. "Theodericum Veronensem" appellabant, atque propter regem Langobardorum Alboinum Veronae iussu mulieris suae anno 572 necatum. Simili modo nomen huius urbis cognoscunt recentiores ob res litterarias. Dantes Alagherius "Paradisum" suum (tertiam partem Divinae Comoediae) Canfrancisco Scaligero, domino Veronae, dicavit.[4] Historia ludi scaenici Shakesperiani (e fabula Italica conversi) de Romeo et Iulietta, familiarum Veronensium prolibus, Veronae in urbe evolvitur.
Pagum Veronensem homines aevi Neolithici coluerunt. Historia prae-Romana urbis Veronae ambigua erat. Plinius maior enim Rhaetis et Euganeis hanc urbem attribuit,[5] Celtis Cenomanis Ptolemaeus,[6] sed recentissime necropolis Cenomanorum, saeculis III–I a.C.n. usitata, sub seminario episcopali hodierno effossa est.[7] A Romanis, duce Gnaeo Pompeio Strabone, ad ripam Athesis dextram anno 89 a.C.n. colonia iuris Latini iuxta legem Pompeiam de Transpadanis condita est, a Brixia deducta si carmen Catullianum vera refert;[8] ibi mox natus est poëta ipse Gaius Valerius Catullus.[9] Ab anno 49 a.C.n. Verona fuit municipium tribus Publiliae sub regione X (Venetia et Histria). Muros urbanos restituit imperator Gallienus, qui longissimum urbi nomen concedit "Colonia Augusta Verona Nova Gallieniana". Ibi concurrebant viae Postumia et Claudia Augusta.
Veronam oppugnavit Constantinus I, contra Maxentium bellum civile gerens, deditionemque cito accepit medio anno 312.[10] Ibi Theodericus anno fere 488 Odovacarem debellavit[11] aulamque suam interdum instituit. Veronae die 28 Iunii 572/573 rex Langobardorum Alboinus a muliere sua necatus est: iusserat enim vinum ea inferendum in poculo e capite patris confecto.[12] Ibidem die 15 Maii 589 rex Authari Theudelindam in matrimonium duxit.[13] Adelchis, ultimi regis Langobardorum filius, a Carolo Magno persecutus, Veronae anno 774 breviter refugium petivit. Annos fere 350 Verona urbs regalis et imperialis fuit, episcopis ibi iussu imperatorum institutis. Ibi rex et imperator Berengarius I die 7 Aprilis 924 prope ecclesiam S. Petri in Castello (hodie deletam) necatus est. Die 3 Ianuarii 1117 gravis terrae motus amphitheatrum partim in ruinas deiecit ecclesiasque fere omnes destruxit.
Medio saeculo XII commune Veronensium, duce imprimis episcopo Tebaldo, libertatem urbis vindicavit, ubi anno 1184 papa Lucius III, a Roma profugus, Concilium Veronense tenuit, adeunte etiam imperator Friderico Barbarossa. Concilio concluso bullam "Ad abolendam" de haeresibus exstirpandis emiserunt. Lucius III Veronae mortuus est die 25 Novembris 1185. Eodem die successor Urbanus III electus in ecclesia S. Petri in Castello coronatus est. Verona mox sub familiae Scaligerorum (della Scala) dominatione cecidit. Medio amphitheatro anno 1278 iussu Alberti Scaligeri Cathari 166 Sirmionenses combusti sunt.
Ab anno 1405 usque ad annum 1797, Verona ad Rem Publicam Venetiae pertinuit.
Anno 1944 urbem Veronam classes aëreae Civitatum Foederatarum sociorumque graviter afflictaverunt. Die 24 Aprilis 1945 milites Germani ab Italia recedentes pontes Marmoreum Romanum Scaligerumque mediaevalem deleverunt, sed ambo annis 1949-1957 stylo historico et lapidibus priscis restructi sunt.
Situm Veronae Liutprandus Cremonensis medio saeculo X sic descripsit:
Inter monumenta aevo Romano aedificata hodieque servata praecellunt Amphitheatrum sive Arena, Pons Marmoreus seu Ponte Pietra, Porta Iovia seu Porta Borsari et Arcus Gavius; adduntur Porta Leonum (ita a recentioribus nuncupatum) et ruinae Theatri Romani iuxta ripam sinistram fluminis saeculo XIX effossae. Sub arco Gavio monstrantur lapides via Postumiae.
Monumentorum Christianorum antiquissima hodie exstantia post terrae motum aedificata sunt. Basilica Sancti Zenonis urbis patroni, annis 1123-1135 reconstructa est eo loco, extra urbis limitem, ubi sepulchrum Zenonis iam a saeculo IV stat, regisque Pippini sepulchrum qui die 8 Iulii 810 mortuus est. Campanile huius basilicae a Dante Alagherio in Divina Comoedia commemoratur;[15] statua Sancti Zenonis mediaevalis in porticu basilicae monstratur. Ecclesia cathedralis S. Mariae Matricularis, in ruinis duarum ecclesiarum a terrae motu deletarum episcopis Tebaldo et Omnibono aedificata et die 13 Septembris 1187 dedicata, saeculis XIV et XV partim refecta est. Tali modo ecclesia SS. Firmi et Rustici anno 1143, basilica Sancti Laurentii anno 1177 et ecclesia Sanctae Mariae Antiquae anno 1185, ecclesia Sanctorum Apostolorum anno 1194 super fundamenta ecclesiarum antiquarum constructae sunt: ecclesia S. Mariae Antiquae fuit sacellum familiae Scaligerorum. In magna ecclesia Sanctae Anastasiae a Dominicanis anno 1290 incepta, anno 1481 confecta, anno 1490 Gulielmus de Bibra legatus Germanicus et pontificalis sepultus est; ibidem anno 1776 schola campanaria, artis campanariae Veronensis incunabulum, constituta est.
Platea Herbarum (Piazza delle Erbe) eo loco patet ubi olim Romani forum urbis designaverunt. Ad hanc plateam stat Domus Mercatorum, anno 1210 e ligno constructa, anno 1301 iussu Alberti I Scaligeri e lapidibus refecta. Ibi etiam monstrantur Domus Mazzanti privatae (Case Mazzanti), aevo medio aedificati, muris exterioribus picti: Verona enim saeculo XVI a peregrinatoribus "urbs picta" appellata est.
Iuxta plateam Dominorum (Piazza dei Signori) aedificia publica surgunt: palatium Communis saeculo XII erectum, anno 1219 post incendium refectum; palatium Tribunalis (Palazzo di Cansignorio) cuius turris anno 1363 confecta est; palatium Potestatis (Palazzo del Podestà) saeculo XIII exeunte confectum. Ibidem stat lobia seu porticus Consilii (Loggia del Consiglio) a fratre Iucundo Veronensi iussu imperatoris Maximiliani anno 1476 aedificata. Anno circiter 1356 constructus est Pons Scaliger munitus, iussu Cangrandis II a Gulielmo Bibensaquam designatus, iuxta quem Castellum Vetus Scaligerorum eisdem annis inceptum est et anno 1376 confectum.
Sedes Dioecesis Veronensis est urbs Verona; templum principale est ecclesia cathedralis S. Mariae Matricularis. Est episcopatus Ecclesiae Catholicae Romanae sub patriarchatu Venetiarum. Ab anno 2007 Iosephus Zenti est episcopus Veronensis.
