동질이상은 화학 조성이 같은 물질이지만 다른 결정 구조를 갖는 것을 말한다. 예를 들면, 방해석(CaCO₃:육방정계)과 아라고나이트(CaCO₃:사방정계), 다이아몬드(C:등축정계)와 흑연(9C:육방정계) 등이 있다.
