남극 기지

남극 기지(南極基地)는 남극에 각 나라들이 지은 과학 연구시설을 일컫는 말이다. 2006년 시점으로 30개국이 남극 기지가 있다. 모든 나라가 남극 조약에 가입하고 있으며, 연중 혹은 여름에 남극 또는 그 주변 해역 및 도서에서 과학적 조사를 실시하고 있다. 대륙 또는 그 주변 지역에는 여름에 4000명, 겨울에는 1000명 정도 연구원이 연구하고 있다.^[1] 기지 설치 지점은 남극 반도와 그 주변이 가장 많다.

역사

첫 기지

국립 스코틀랜드 남극 탐험대가 남극 지역에 처음 설립한 영구 기지인 오몬드 하우스(Omond House)의 모습

20세기 초 남극 탐험의 영웅시대 대륙에 첫 기지가 설립되었다. 1903년 윌리암 스피어 브루스(William Speirs Bruce)의 국립 스코틀랜드 남극 탐험대(Scottish National Antarctic Expedition)이 기상학 기지를 세우려는 목적으로 내륙으로 들어갔으나 땅을 찾지 못하고, 사우스오크니 제도에 기상학 기지를 건설하게 된다.^[2][3]
