에드워드 손다이크

에드워드 "테드" 손다이크 (Edward Lee "Ted" Thorndike, 1874년 8월 31일 ~ 1949년 8월 9일)는 전체 경력의 대부분을 컬럼비아 대학교에서 지녔던, 미국의 심리학자이다.

연결주의

손다이크는 행동주의와 학습 뿐만이 아니라, 심리학 실험에 동물을 이용한 선구자이기도 했다.^[1] 손다이크는 동물과 자신의 연구를 기반으로 학습 이론을 세울 수 있었다.^[1] 그의 박사 학위 논문 "Animal Intelligence: An Experimental Study of the Associative Processes in Animals"는 인간을 대상으로 삼지 않은 최초의 논문이었다.^[1] 손다이크는 동물들이 모방이나 관찰을 통해 행동을 배울 수 있는지에 대해 관심을 가졌다.^[2] 이를 알아내기 위해 길이 20인치, 너비 15인치, 높이 12인치의 퍼즐 상자들을 만들었다.^[3] 각 상자는 도르래를 통해 열리는 문이 있었는데, 동물이 막대를 누르면 문에 부착되어 있는 줄이 움직여 문이 열리게 되는 구조였다.^[3] 동물에는 막대를 누르거나 레버를 당길 때, 문에 부착되어 있는 줄을 올리는 무게와 여는 문을 일으킬 것이다.^[3] 그는 그것이 그들이 탈출하는 데 걸린 시간을 측정하면서 손다이크 퍼즐 상자는 동물이 특정한 반응 (레버를 당기거나 버튼을 누르는 것)을 수행하기 위해 배치되었다.^[1] 일단 동물이 원하는 응답을 실행했다면 그들은 탈출 할 수 있었고 또한 보상을 받았는데, 보통 음식이였다.^[1] 손다이크는 주로 자신의 퍼즐 상자에 고양이를 사용했다. 처음 상자 안에 들어간 고양이는 탈출하는 방법을 알지 못해 안절부절 못하고, 돌아다니기만 하였다. 고양이가 관찰을 통해 학습할 수 있는지 알아내기 위해 손다이크는 고양이로 하여금 다른 동물들이 상자에서 탈출하는 모습을 보게 하였다. 다른 동물들의 모습을 본 고양이와 그렇지 않은 고양이가 상자를 탈출하는데 걸리는 시간을 비교한 결과, 학습에 걸리는 시간은 별 차이가 나지 않았다. 예상했던 결과가 나오지 않자 손다이크는 새로운 실험을 진행하였는데, 고양이가 우연히 한 번 막대를 누른 후 같은 행동을 하는데까지 걸리는 시간을 측정한 결과, 그 간격이 점점 좁아진다는 사실을 알아내었다. 이 실험을 통해 손다이크는 S자 형태의 학습 곡선을 그려낼 수 있었다.

퍼즐상자

손다이크는 퍼즐 상자(puzzle box)를 통해 고양이가 상자를 탈출하는데 통찰력을 사용하는지 하지 않는지 명확하게 구별짓고 싶어했다. 그는 만약 고양이가 통찰력을 사용한다면 탈출에 필요한 시간이 급격하게 줄어들 것이라고 예상하였고, 학습 곡선이 점진적인 형태를 띠게 되자 고양이가 지속적인 학습을 통해 탈출할 수 있었다는 결론을 내렸다.

경력

1912년, 손다이크는 미국 심리학 협회 회장으로 선출되었다. 그는 1917년에 심리학자로선 유일하게 국립 과학 아카데미의 회원이 되었다. 1934년, 손다이크는 미국 과학 진흥 협회 회장을 역임했다.
