Shire)」は、行政上の区域や地域を表す言葉である。もともとはローマ人が去った後イングランド島に入ってきたサクソン人の言葉で、首長や豪族の領地を指す「scir」という語だった。のちに「scir」が転訛して「shire」となった。9世紀後半のアルフレッド大王が各地に王領「shire
