En 1813, Rusa imperio konquestis la urbo e rinomizis ol Elizavetpol. En 1935, Iosif Stalin rinomizis ol Kirovabad. Kande Azerbaijan divenis itere nedependanta, l'urbo rinomizesis Gəncə.
