Գիրոկաստրա (ալբաներեն՝ Gjirokastër), քաղաք Ալբանիայի հարավային մասում, Գերյա սարի և Դրինո գետի միջև ընկած հովտում, ծովի մակերևույթից 300 մետր բարձրության վրա։ Բնակավայրի հին քաղաքամասն ընդգրկված է ՅՈՒՆԵՍԿՕ-ի Համաշխարհային ժառանգության հուշարձանների ցանկում։ Քաղաքին բարձունքից հսկում է միջնադարյան բերդը, որտեղ հինգ տարին մեկ անգամ անց է կացվում Գիրոկաստրայի՝ ազգային բանահյուսությանը նվիրված փառատոնը։ Այս բնակավայրում են ծնվել ու մեծացել Ալբանիայի նշանավոր առաջնորդներից մեկը՝ Էնվեր Խոջան և անվանի գրող, մի շարք միջազգային հեղինակավոր գրական մրցանակների դափնեկիր Իսմայիլ Կադարեն։

Հնագիտական պեղումների արդյունքները վկայում են, որ Գիրոկաստրայի ներկայիս տարածքում ու շրջակայքում դեռևս բրոնզեդարյան ժամանակներում ապրել են մարդիկ, որոնք ամենայն հավանականությամբ խոսել են հին հունարենի հյուսիսարևմտյան՝ դորիական բարբառով^[4]։ Հնագետները հայտնաբերել են վաղ երկաթի դարի խեցեղեն արտեֆակտներ, որոնք իրենց պատրաստման ոճով նմանվում են Ալբանիայի Էլբասան շրջանի Պաժոկ բնակավայրի մոտ բացված հնավայրում և Ալբանիայի մի շարք այլ հնավայրերում գտնված ուշբրոնզեդարյան խեցեղենին^[5]։ Գիրոկաստրայի շրջակայքում ամենից վաղ բնակություն հաստատած այն ցեղերը, որոնց մասին որոշակիացված վկայություններ կան, եղել են հունախոս կաոնյաններ, որոնք պատկանել են էպիրուսյան խմբին^[6]։

Պատմական փաստաթղթերում բնակավայրն առաջին անգամ հիշատակվել է 1336 թվականին, հունական Αργυρόκαστρο - Argyrokastro անվանումով, որպես Բյուզանդական կայսրության մաս հանդիսացող տարածք:^[7] Մերձակայքում գտնվող Ադրիանապոլսի անկումից հետո դարձել է ուղղափառ քրիստոնեական թեմի մաս^[8]։ Այնուհետև կռվախնձոր է դարձել Էպիրուսի բռնակալական պետության և ալբանական Զենևիսի կլանի միջև։ 1417 թվականին ընկել է թուրքական տիրապետության տակ և այդպես մնացել գրեթե հինգ հարյուրամյակ՝ մինչև 1913 թվականը^[9]։ Այդ շրջանում հայտնի է եղել Էրգիրի կամ Էրգիրի Կասրի անվանումով։ Եվ եթե 16-րդ դարում գերազանցապես բնակեցված էր քրիստոնյաներով, ապա 19-րդ դարի սկզբներին դարձել էր հիմնականում մուսուլմանաբնակ, վերածվել բեկտաշի կոչվող դավանաբանական ուղղության կրոնական կենտրոնի։ 1912-1913 թվականների բալկանյան պատերազմի ժամանակ հունական բանակը գրավել է այն^[10], բայց կարճ ժամանակ անց բնակավայրը ներառվել է Ալբանիայի նորանկախ պետության կազմում։ Դա առաջ է բերել տեղի հույն բնակչության ընդվզումն ու ըմբոստացումը. կռիվների արդյունքում նրանք 1914 թվականին ստեղծել են Հյուսիսային Էպիրուսի ինքնավար հանրապետությունը՝ Գիրոկաստրա մայրաքաղաքով, բայց այդ հանրապետությունը երկար չի գոյատևել. 1921 թվականին քաղաքը վերջնականապես հանձնվել է Ալբանիային^[11]։ 1990-ական թվականների կեսերին այստեղ բռնկված հակակառավարական ցույցերը հանգեցրեցին Ալբանիայի 1997 թվականի քաղաքացիական պատերազմին^[12]։

Ներկայումս քաղաքում, մուսուլման և ուղղափառ ալբանացիների հետ կողք կողքի, ապրում ու գործում է հունական թեև ոչ մեծաթիվ, սակայն որոշակի ազդեցություն ունեցող համայնք^[13]^[14]։ Գիրոկաստրան, Սարանդա քաղաքի հետ մեկտեղ, համարվում է Ալբանիայի հունական համայնքի կենտրոններից մեկը^[15], որտեղ Հունաստանը հյուպատոսարան է բացել։

Պատմական փաստաթղթերում քաղաքն առաջին անգամ հիշատակել է Հովհաննես Վեցերորդ Կանտակուզենոսը, 1336 թվականին, միջնադարյան հունարեն Argyrocastron (հուն․՝ Αργυρόκαστρον) անվանումով^[16], որն առաջացել է հունարեն ἀργυρόν (արգիրոն), (նշանակում է արծաթ) ու κάστρον (կաստրոն, այսինքն՝ բերդ) բառերի միացումով և նշանակել է Արծաթաբերդ։ Բյուզանդական ժամանակագիրները նույնպես հարանման մի անվանում են գործածել՝ Argyropolyhni, որ նշանակում է Արծաթավան կամ Արծաթաշեն (հուն․՝ Αργυροπολύχνη): Գոյություն ունի մեկ այլ վարկած, ըստ որի՝ քաղաքի անվանումը ծագել է առասպելական Արգիրո իշխանուհու անունից, իշխանուհի, ում մասին 19-րդ դարի գրող Կոստաս Կրիստալիսը փոքրածավալ մի վեպ է գրել^[17], իսկ Իսմայիլ Կադարեն՝ 1960-ական թվականներին՝ մի ընդարձակ բանաստեղծություն, բայց դա կարելի է համարել պարզապես ժողովրդական ստուգաբանության նմուշ, քանի որ, ինչպես վկայում են պատմական անհերքելի փաստերը, իշխանուհին ապրել է շատ ավելի ուշ ժամանակներում՝ 15-րդ դարի երկրորդ կեսին^[18]։

Քաղաքի ալբանական անվանաձևը Gjirokastra է, ալբաներենի գեգ բարբառով՝ Gjinokastër. երկու անվանաձևերն էլ առաջացել են քաղաքի հունական անունից^[19]։
