O 15 de abril de 2019, pouco antes das 18:50 CEST, un lume comezou no teito da catedral de Notre-Dame en París, Francia, causando danos significativos na construción. O chapitel e o tellado da catedral colapsaron, e producíronse danos considerables no interior, muros superiores e fiestras, así como numerosas obras de arte.[1][2] Porén, a bóveda de pedra do teito impediu que o lume se espallase polo interior dos baixos da catedral. O presidente francés Emmanuel Macron anunciou a creación dunha campaña nacional de recollida de fondos para restaurar Notre-Dame.[3][4]
A construción da catedral de Notre-Dame de París comezou no século XII, usando cachotaría de pedra para os muros e a bóveda, e madeira para o tellado principal e o icónico chapitel. O chapitel foi unha recreación do século XIX, en carballo recuberto con chumbo, xa que o chapitel orixinal fora eliminado en 1786.[5]
Nos anos anteriores ó incendio, a catedral comezara a amosar unha deterioración significativa, xa que algúns dos elementos de pedra caeran. Philippe Villeneuve, arquitecto en xefe de Monumetos Históricos en Francia, declarou en xullo de 2017 que a "polución era o principal culpable".[6] En 2014, o Ministerio de Cultura estimou o custo dos traballos de renovación en 150 millóns de euros.[7]
En 2016, a arquidiocese de París fixo un chamamento para recadar 100 millóns de euros ó longo dos seguinte cinco a dez anos para asumir os custos de mantemento e restauración.[6] No momento do lume, estábanse a realizar renovacións no chapitel, cun custo estimado de 6 millóns de euros.[8][9] Para iso, erixíronse estadais de ferro no tellado e arredor do chapitel. As estatuas de pedra, cobre e bronce, incluíndo estatuas dos doce apóstolos que rodeaban a base do chapitel, foran retirados do sitio días antes do incendio como parte das renovacións.[10][11]
Crese que o lume comezou no ático da catedral,[12] arredor das 18:50 CEST, preto do remate do día, cando a catedral estaba aberta a turistas. Estaba programada unha misa sobre esa hora, entre as 18:15 e as 19:00.[13] Segundo testemuñas na escena, as portas da catedral pecháronse abruptamente cando tentaron entrar, e un fume branco comezou a extenderse dende o teito.[14] O fume converteuse en negro, indicando que estaba a ocorrer un lume máis grande.[14] A policía e outras forzas de seguridade evacuaron axiña Île de la Cité, e a cidade pechou o acceso á illa.[14][15][16] A xente reuniuse arredor das beiras do Sena e nos edificios achegados para ver.[14]
Un voceiro da brigada de bombeiros de París anunciou que arredor de catrocentos bombeiros estiveron involucrados na extinción.[17][18][12][14][19][20] A posibilidade de extinción aérea foi rexeitada, xa que o peso da auga e a intensidade da caída a baixa altura poderían debilitar a estrutura da catedral.[21] O persoal de emerxencia tratou de salvar a arte e os artefactos relixiosos gardados na catedral. Segundo un voceiro da catedral, algunhas das obras de arte xa se retiraran antes das renovacións e a maioría das reliquias sagradas estaban gardadas na sancristía.[5] Descoñécese se as reliquias que non foron trasladadas sobreviviron ó incendio.[12] A policía de París declarou que non houbo ningunha vítima mortal,[1][12] mais un dos bombeiros e dous axentes de policía saíron feridos.[22][12]
