Nicea é unha antiga cidade de Bitinia, en Asia Menor, na beira do lago Iznik, fundada por Antígono Monoftalmo c. 316 a.C. co nome de Antigonia. Na época romana converteuse nun dos principais centros culturais da zona. Foi un próspero enclave comercial emprazado no camiño de Constantinopla. En 1078 foi tomada polos turcos selxúcidas e pasou a ser capital do sultanato do Rum. Volveu a mans dos cristiáns en 1097, converténdose en capital do Imperio Bizantino (1204-1261) durante a ocupación de Constantinopla polos cruzados. Desde 1331 é a actual cidade turca de Iznik, provincia de Bursa.
