A (ou o) lazurita é un mineral do grupo dos silicatos, un subgrupo de tectosilicatos. É o principal constuínte e o que dá a cor azul ao lapislázuli, unha rocha composta por tres minerais: lazurita, calcita e pirita.

Químicamente, a lazurita é un aluminosilicato con outros anións de sodio e calcio con xofre cúbico. É un feldespato do grupo sodalita. Ten unha cor azul profunda, de gran beleza. O seu nome deriva do árabe lāzūrd, variación de lāzawárd ou do persa lājwārd no sentido de "lapislázuli, azul". [1] A miúdo confúndese con lazulita ( fosfato de magnesio básico e aluminio monoclínico ) e azurita ( carbonato de cobre monoclínico ), cuxa única semellanza é a cor azul.
Aparece en rochas calcarias sometidas a metamorfismo de contacto, normalmente asociada a calcita, pirita, diopsido e moscovita . Tamén se pode atopar en granulitos de alta temperatura .
É un mineral caro, coñecido popularmente por dar a cor azul ao lapislázuli.
O lapislázuli foi extraído durante séculos de minas que aínda están en funcionamento no Afganistán, no val do Koksha, [2] desde onde foi exportado para o Oriente Medio e Europa por máis de mil anos. Tamén se atopa en Ovalle ( Chile ), así como na Birmania, Siberia, Angola, Canadá e os Estados Unidos.
En Europa, a lazurita tamén se usou como pigmento desde a Idade Media ao século XX, moitas veces confundíndose co pigmento de azurita, extraído do mineral do mesmo nome, de tonalidades parecidas e bastante máis barato. Hoxe en día o azul prodúcese artificialmente, de xeito que cesou a explotación deste mineral para esa fin.
Os cristais limpos e ben formados de lazurita pura son altamente valorizados polos colecionistas.
